More than one-in-five adult Americans took at least one pharmaceutical drug commonly used to treat a psychiatric or behavioral disorder in 2010 according to “America’s State of Mind,” a Medco Health Solutions, Inc. analysis of trends in mental health medication usage among approximately 2.5 million insured Americans, comparing utilization of antidepressants, antipsychotics, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) drugs and anti-anxiety treatments from 2001 to 2010. Even more concerning about this situation is that for American women, the numbers rose to one in four. While I’m not totally surprised at these numbers considering all the advertising that pharmaceutical companies are allowed to do, it does cause me to stop and think about better solutions to this health crisis.
As far as use, not surprisingly, antidepressants come in number one with over 20 percent of women on a drug typically prescribed to treat depression. Anxiety treatments used by women are at almost twice the rate of men; however, greatest use is found among middle-aged women (45-65 years old – note these ages are normally the ages of peri-menopause and post menopause), 11 percent of whom were on an anti-anxiety drug last year.

Vitamin B12 (cobalamin) is one of the 13 vitamins our body must have for good health and wellness. It is not only essential for the production of red blood cells but also supports the protection of a healthy nervous system. It is also an essential element in the construction of our DNA. B12 deficiency damages the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, and nerves of the eye.
In 1934, Whipple, Murphy, and Minot shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their life saving discovery found in liver. The disorder was referred to as “pernicious anemia” because before this discovery, death was inevitable. In 1948, the substance in the liver was isolated and named cobalamin (vitamin B12).

- Pray about everything.
- Talk less; Listen more.
- Go to bed before 10:30 p.m. Sleep in a cool dark room.
- Get up on time so you can start the day unrushed.
- During your morning shower/bath think of at least five blessings in your life.
- Learn to politely say “No,” to projects/activities that do not fit into your time schedule.
- Learn to delegate tasks to others.
- Simplify and un-clutter your life. Keep your home, car and your office organized.
- Less is often more.
- Allow extra time to do things and to get to places. Constantly being late is fertile ground for stress.
- Respect other people’s time just as you want them to respect yours. If you are held up in traffic then call ahead and/or be willing to re-schedule the meeting, appointment, etc.
- Pace yourself. Spread out big changes and difficult projects over time; don’t lump the difficult things all together. Don’t procrastinate.
- Take one day at a time. Learn to live in the “now”.
- Separate worry from concerns. If a situation is a concern, find out what God would have you to do and let go of the anxiety. Remember that there are always solutions and answers to every situation and concern. Worry will rob you of your joy.
- Live within your budget and means. Save some money from every paycheck, even if it is only $5.
- Have backups; an extra car key in your wallet, an extra house key buried in the garden, extra stamps, extra sunglasses, extra garage door opener, etc.
- K. M. S. (Keep Mouth Shut!) This single piece of advice can prevent an enormous amount of trouble and stress. Practice it regularly.
- Do something for the child in you everyday.
- Carry an inspirational book with you to read while waiting in line or waiting for an appointment.
- Get daily exercise and sunshine. A daily walk in the sunshine is not only healthy but will help to minimize life’s stressors.
- Eat healthy at every meal and pass on the fast food and sugary drinks/snacks.
- Organize your desk/work area so that everything has its place.
- Listen to a self-help or inspirational CD while driving that can help improve your quality of life.
- Write thoughts and inspirations down. Keep a Blessings List or Notebook and add to it every evening before bed.
- Every day take 20 minutes to be alone. Practice deep breathing exercises, take a hot bath, read, meditate, pray, sip a cup of herbal tea, listen to soothing music or just close your eyes and relax. Set up a comfy chair with a nice throw/blanket in your bedroom or den. Include a side table to hold a lamp, books, IPOD, CD player, etc. Let your family know that when you are in that chair, you are unavailable unless someone or something is on fire!
- When concerns arise, talk to God on the spot. Try to nip small concerns in the bud. Don’t wait until its time to go to bed to pray – most of us are too tired.
- Cherish your friends and acknowledge their special days (birthday, anniversary, etc.)
- Keep a folder of favorite scriptures and sayings on hand.
- Remember that the shortest bridge between despair and hope is often a good “Thank you God!”
- Flash a big smile at two people (that you don’t know) everyday…just for fun!
- Remember to laugh!
- Learn to control your temper. Harsh words said in anger can never be taken back. They have a negative effect on every cell of the body and actually bring the immune system down.
- Take your work seriously, but yourself not at all. Don’t be too hard on yourself.
- Develop a forgiving attitude and spirit (most people are doing the best they can). We all make mistakes. Practice forgiveness and soon it will become habit!
- Be kind to unkind people (they probably need it the most).
- Sit on your ego. Don’t talk about yourself and your accomplishments all the time.
- Slow down and enjoy each moment. Make a practice of being aware of all that is going on around you—flowers, refreshing rain, dew drops on trees, deep colors of nature, cool breeze, the aroma of cookies in the oven, etc.
- Take an organic multi-vitamin/mineral supplement every day. Include a natural sourced B-Complex to help your body manage stress. It’s a proven fact that vitamins and minerals can help with stress.
- Eliminate EMF (electromagnetic fields) stress by using EMF protection. Research now links long term exposure to manmade EMFs with chronic health issues — from stress and fatigue to cancer.
- Be positive! Look for the good in every event and situation that comes your way.
- Be teachable and desire to learn. Know-it-alls are tiresome to the spirit and often avoided by others.
- Eliminate negative TV and movies.
- Decide to do more reading, listening to good music, outdoor activities, family night game playing, crafting, evenings with good friends, etc.
- Invest in family relationships. Give your spouse and children your undivided attention, support and love. Tell them you love them every day!
- Remember that you are not the general manager of the universe.

With the recent nuclear catastrophe happening in Japan as well as the probability that nuclear events will continue to be a part of our world, it’s prudent to have good reference information as to how the body can be supported (using natural means) and protected should high radiation exposure become a reality. Knowledge and information empower and should always propel one toward effective preparation and planning, not fear. The power of fear is destructive in that it paralyzes resulting in unwise decisions. Along with knowledge and preparedness, we must also be aware of the very real probability that the general public will not be privy to factual information. Hopefully my readers will copy this information and place in a safe place for future reference.
Fighting Radiation & Chemical Pollutants with Foods, Herbs, & Vitamins by Steven R. Schechter, ND was required reading when I was studying for my ND. It’s difficult now to find copies at a reasonable price of this out of print but very informational book. Below are some of the chapter titles and information that Dr. Schechter deals with in his book as well as some of my own research/suggestions. (more…)

“Learning to forgive is one of the great paths to inner peace” Anonymous.
It has been said that harboring resentment and holding back forgiveness is like drinking poison and hoping the otherperson dies. Physics dictates that what goes on in the mind will have an effect on the physical body. It is also interesting to note that forgiveness is something nearly all Americans want — 94% surveyed in a nationwide Gallup poll indicated it was important to forgive — but only 48% said they usually tried to forgive others. Besides making you miserable and zapping your enjoyment from life, un-forgiveness comes with a laundry list of negative health effects. Psychologist Loren Toussaint of Luther University in Iowa was among the first to demonstrate a long-term link between people’s health and their ability to forgive. In what many call the new science of forgiveness, numbers of overwhelming case studies have shown:

1. Sleep: Americans are some of the most sleep deprived people on the planet. It is estimated that at least 40 million Americans each year suffer from chronic, long-term sleep disorders and an additional 20 million experience occasional sleeping concerns. With the invention of the electric light we have not only seen sleep deprivation soar but also disease and illness. Your body requires sleep to repair, heal, and restore itself and performs the most healing between the hours of 10:00 PM – 2:00 AM. If one is not sleeping during these optimum healing times, there is no way to play catch-up. Scientists tell us that the body is composed of 750 trillion cells and replaces every cell every seven years by building 300 billion new cells every night. According to The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, “neurons that control sleep interact closely with the immune system. As anyone who has had the flu knows, infectious diseases tend to make us feel sleepy. This probably happens because cytokines, chemicals our immune systems produce while fighting an infection, are powerful sleep-inducing chemicals. Sleep may help the body conserve energy and other resources that the immune system needs to mount an attack.” Sleep deprivation may result in memory concerns, weight gain and metabolism issues, increased irritability and moodiness, hormone imbalance, hypertension and altered immune function, including the activity of the body’s killer cells. Keeping up with sleep requirements may also help fight cancer. To improve your sleep see 101 Ways to Get a Great Night’s Sleep.

Stress seems to define many people’s lives in this day and age. Trying to make ends meet financially, balance work and family responsibilities, have quality relationships, and deal with the inevitable crisis that come up in all of our lives takes its toll both physically and emotionally.
Stress is a given. It’s not a question of whether we will have it, but rather how we are going to deal with it. Actually, not all stress is bad. When needed and appropriate, stress can enable us to deal with difficult or dangerous moments by releasing adrenaline and other hormones to meet the immediate need. Stress really begins to cause concerns when it is chronic, and when we don’t take positive steps to eliminate it or cope with it.

The concept of a mind-body connection is as old as time itself. The Bible and other ancient literature refer to the benefits of joy, laughter, and other positive emotions, as well as to the physically damaging effects of bitterness, unforgiveness, and similar negative emotions. The French mathe
matician and philosopher Rene Descarte proposed such a connection, a view that put him at odds with the Catholic church during the Middle Ages. Many conventional health practitioners of the last century have scoffed at such a notion, but new scientific tools and diagnostic techniques have recently kindled new interest in and respect for this holistic approach to health and wellness.
Many studies have been done that indicate proof positive that people who are emotionally healthy — feeling positive about themselves and their relationships with others — are much less prone to getting sick and tend to heal much faster if they are fighting an illness. Modern imaging techniques have even given us pictures that support this theory. Specifically, abnormal intestinal activity, such as indigestion and stomach aches, have been documented to occur when negative stress sets off activities in the brain that chemically cause such discomfort.
Rather than doubting the effects of emotions on the body, many modern physicians are now embracing this idea. In fact, some new terms have cropped up in medicine in the last few years, terms such as “health psychologist,” “behavioral medicine,” and the field of “psychoneuroimmunology.” More and more hard evidence is being discovered that gives increased creedence to what we have always instinctively known and what natural health practitioners have been proclaiming for years.

How Do Emotions Affect Our Physical Health?
Our bodies are basically complex chemical factories with the brain running the show. Our organs do not operate independently, but take their orders from the brain and central nervous system — orders that are chemically delivered. Physical characteristics such as digestion, heart function, blood pressure, respiration, and other bodily functions are triggered by the release of hormones and other chemicals that are originally stimulated by the brain. Research has proven that negative emotions such as fear, bitterness, anxiety, anger, trying to get ‘even ‘, depression, and unforgiveness can cause the release of chemical agents that lead to poor digestion and absorption of nutrients, irregular heartbeat, high blood pressure, and inflammation throughout the body, a key factor in cancer, heart disease, and many other debilitating conditions.

Federal regulators have pulled a lot of bizarre stunts over the years, but this one is a real head-scratcher. Just over a month ago, the manufacturer of an antidepressant drug called Lexapro (Forest Laboratories Inc.) was brought up on charges for illegally bribing pediatricians to prescribe it for children, for which it was not approved. So what does the FDA do? They announced last week that they had given the green light for Lexapro to be used on patients from 12-17 years of age. To make things even weirder, this ruling contradicts Forest Labs’ own statement that Lexapro had not proven itself in studies to effectively maintain control of depression symptoms in adolescents.
The timing of this move makes absolutely no sense, and it screams of corruption and conflict of interest, something the FDA is no stranger to. The really odd thing about this all is that the FDA’s ruling actually overrides Forest Labs’ findings that Lexapro is ineffective for treating depressed children, and that it is highly dangerous for them as well — even more so than for adults. If you visit Forest Labs’ Lexapro website where their branding mantra is “POWER TO ENJOY LIFE”, they have clearly posted an ominous warning right under their Big Announcement:

The idea of “the pursuit of happiness” may have been popularized in the Declaration of Independence, but according to a new study, our personal happiness is not a solo affair. It has been known for years that people who have many relationships with others are most likely to feel happy, but the other side of the coin is that my mood — for good or bad — can significantly impact the well-being of a large number of other individuals.
We are by nature social creatures, and we have been created to flourish best in a positive and healthy social network. I found this article to be especially appropriate for our current state of affairs here in America, and around the world as well. While we are facing some very real challenges in our economy, it is so easy to focus on the fear and the negativity that pervades the media day in and day out. Today’s article shines some light on how happiness is not only an individual pursuit, but that it has a corporate aspect as well.
