A new animal study shows that carvacrol, the active component of oregano oil, can actually prevent diet-induced obesity by modulating genes as well as reducing inflammation in white adipose tissue. Carvacrol (2-methyl-5-isopropylphenol) is a monoterpene phenolic constituent of the essential oil produced by numerous aromatic plants and spices such as oregano oil.
The main objective of the study was to investigate effects of carvacrol in mice fed with a high-fat diet, which is an important model and cause of modern day obesity, and to study the potential underlying mechanisms focusing on the gene expression involved in adipogenesis, thermogenesis and inflammation.

More than one-in-five adult Americans took at least one pharmaceutical drug commonly used to treat a psychiatric or behavioral disorder in 2010 according to “America’s State of Mind,” a Medco Health Solutions, Inc. analysis of trends in mental health medication usage among approximately 2.5 million insured Americans, comparing utilization of antidepressants, antipsychotics, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) drugs and anti-anxiety treatments from 2001 to 2010. Even more concerning about this situation is that for American women, the numbers rose to one in four. While I’m not totally surprised at these numbers considering all the advertising that pharmaceutical companies are allowed to do, it does cause me to stop and think about better solutions to this health crisis.
As far as use, not surprisingly, antidepressants come in number one with over 20 percent of women on a drug typically prescribed to treat depression. Anxiety treatments used by women are at almost twice the rate of men; however, greatest use is found among middle-aged women (45-65 years old – note these ages are normally the ages of peri-menopause and post menopause), 11 percent of whom were on an anti-anxiety drug last year.

Vitamin B12 (cobalamin) is one of the 13 vitamins our body must have for good health and wellness. It is not only essential for the production of red blood cells but also supports the protection of a healthy nervous system. It is also an essential element in the construction of our DNA. B12 deficiency damages the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, and nerves of the eye.
In 1934, Whipple, Murphy, and Minot shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their life saving discovery found in liver. The disorder was referred to as “pernicious anemia” because before this discovery, death was inevitable. In 1948, the substance in the liver was isolated and named cobalamin (vitamin B12).

The liver is one of the most hard-working organs of the body and a healthy liver is critical to many aspects of overall wellness. Most people are aware that the liver is the main filter of the body. It is true that it plays an important role in processing nutrients and eliminating waste from the body, but did you know that this amazing organ also is a key player in the process of hormone regulation throughout the body?
Hormones are substances that are normally associated with the endocrine system, and these chemical compounds are involved in literally every metabolic process in the body both on the cellular and body tissue levels. In fact, life itself could not be possible without the presence of hormones.

The adrenals are a part of the body’s very complex Endocrine System. They are a matching pair of glands, each about the size of a walnut, that are located above both kidneys. They may be small, but the adrenals play a crucial role in our overall wellness. Their main function is to produce and regulate several key hormones. These include adrenaline, noradrenaline, cortisol, DHEA, estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone.
When the adrenal glands are working properly, they help the body to healthily respond to stressful situations by temporarily releasing more hormones. The results may include an increase in heart rate and blood pressure, a surge of energy, and heightened senses. This collective response is commonly called “fight or flight,” and is designed to help us manage short-term stress.

Cancer – Do you know there are over 200 different variations of the disease according to the National Cancer Institute? Having the ability to grow in any organ in the body, this wicked disease claimed the lives of seven million people worldwide, according to public health expert Professor Sir John Marmott. Deaths are expected rise to over 10 million per year by 2020. It ranks as the number 2 cause of death in the United States behind heart disease. Lung, colon, prostate and breast cancer account for more than half of cancer deaths in the United States. Over 14,000 chemicals are added to the food supply in the United States today. Due to exposure from various sources, tracing a chronic illness to one toxin can be a daunting task; subsequently the connections are often never made. In 2003, a study was done by Belgian Toxicologist Dr.Charles Charlier in which he found that women with breast cancer are 5-9 times more likely to have pesticide residue in their blood than those who do not.

Been seeing a lot of pink ribbons lately? It’s a sure sign that it’s National Breast Cancer Awareness Month again, an annual event that has been recognized every October since 1985.
It is sponsored by the National Cancer Institute, the American Cancer Society, and over a dozen other medical, governmental, and professional organizations.

Statistics now tell us that hot flashes and/or night sweats occur in 40 – 90% of women during the time of peri-menopause into menopause and up to 85% of women after menopause. And there are other typical complaints that are related to hot flashes which include anxiety, nausea, sleep disruptions, depression, dryness of eyes and vagina, feelings of suffocation, heart palpitations and inability to concentrate.
Hot flashes are the #1 complaint that I hear from women who seek natural hormone balancing. While no one ever died of a hot flash or night sweat, they can certainly affect one’s quality of life as well as one’s emotional well-being.

There are already plenty of good reasons to avoid using synthetic hormones, as these have been clearly linked to serious health problems such as breast cancer, heart disease, and other debilitating and potentially deadly health concerns. A new study has now been released which indicates a significant increase in fatalities from certain types of lung cancer in women who were also using synthetic hormones to treat menopause symptoms. (Link to article: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090530/ap_on_he_me/us_med_hormones_lung_cancer_4)
The study is the latest conclusion from on ongoing federal research project called The Women’s Health Initiative that has been continuing since the late 1990s. Various clinical studies have analyzed the effects of synthetic hormones, and the news is not good. In fact, one phase of the research had to be halted prematurely in 2002 because an alarming percentage of the participants (women given Prempro, an artificial estrogen-progestin compound manufactured by Wyeth Pharmaceuticals) were developing breast cancer.

As the number of baby-boomers who reach retirement continues to grow, an eye disease called macular degeneration – or age-related macular degeneration (AMD) – is an ever-increasing health issue for millions of people. In fact, AMD is statistically found in nearly one-third of American adults over the age of 65, and is the leading cause of blindness in this age group. Scientists are predicting a whopping 18 million cases of AMD by the year 2050, and until recently, this disease was thought to be incurable and irreversible. However, researchers have recently conducted studies that indicate great hope for preventing and potentially healing AMD through the use of supplementation with bioidentical hormones.
What is AMD?

The use of artificial Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) drugs is associated with many hazardous side effects, including an increased risk for cancers, strokes, dementia, and other serious disease. A new study now indicates that synthetic HRT drugs can also literally shrink the brains of women who use them.
The FDA and mainstream medicine are aware of these dangerous side effects, yet they continue to allow and promote HRT by prescription to millions of women. Some of the probable reasons for that are discussed in this article.
As huge numbers of baby boomers approach menopause, the need for natural hormonal balance is a critical health issue. However, the best way to deal with this situation is to work with a natural medicine healthcare provider that can test you (saliva is what I recommend) to see exactly which hormones you need, and then recommend natural hormone balancing therapies that will work with your body and not against it. This is a much safer and more effective plan than the “one size fits all” approach often used with conventional HRT. Saliva and Blood-Spot Test kits are quick, efficient and cost effective allowing one to perform these tests in the privacy of their own home. I highly recommend them.
