Editorial - Time To Change Direction?

Welcome to 2005!  A new year and an opportunity to change direction.   For everyone of us it is now time to put the past behind us (2004 is now "the past") and begin with a fresh, clean slate.  You are the one that will determine and allow what is written on your slate this year. Maybe it's time to change directions.  I like what Jim Allen has to say about this: "Employ the power of positive quitting. Most of us view quitting as something negative, but it’s not. ‘Winners never quit,’ we’re told, when, in reality, winners quit all the time: choosing to stop doing things that aren’t creating the results they desire. When you quit all the things that aren’t working for you, when you quit tolerating all the negative things that hold you back, you’ll create a positive ‘charge’ in your life as well as create the space in your life for more positive experiences."   Many of us frequently find ourself in a "rut" which means we are doing the same thing over and over again while expecting different results.  Not everything that we do or happens to us this year will be "according to plan".  Just remember to continue to move forward and "do the next thing" no matter what life presents to you.  Don't let setbacks destroy your attitude and don't EVER give up. Difficulties usually precede victories.

As promised in last month's newsletter, I am devoting the January newsletter to the subject of getting healthy and staying healthy.  In my seminars I usually ask the question "Do you feel like you are healthy?"  Invariably I will get mostly nods of "yes" from the audience.  But during the question and answer session these same people will present health problems and ask how to get rid of them.  What's the matter with this picture?  I have come to realize that we have lost the definition of health. We do not have a clue as to what health consists of.  Health is, quite simply, being free of dis-ease.  Think about that.  Dis-ease means that the body is not "at ease."  Do you have constant aches and pains? migraines/headaches? skin problems? arthritis? diabetes? fibromyalgia? heart problems? frequent colds/flu? sinus problems? allergies? constipation? weight problems? depression? ADD/ADHD? hormone imbalance?  I could go on and on.  Guess what?  These are indications that you are not experiencing true health!  But, you say, aren't these just the normal health problems that normal people have?  Isn't this just the process of aging?  You see most of us believe that as long as we are able to get out of bed and function through the day then we "must" be healthy. Not to mention that we need six Tylenol, 2 cups of coffee and three Cokes to actually get through the day, then four Advil to get to sleep at night. This is not health!  I say that we are missing out and settling for about 40% and it is medicore health, at best.

After 90 days on our Optimum Health Strategies Program, people who decide to get serious and work 24/7 on their health have made the following comment:  "I had forgotten what it feels like to feel healthy!!  This is fantastic!"  By concentrating on their total health, weight comes off, blood pressure comes down, diabetes goes away, aches and pains disappear, skin glows, allergies become fewer, experience regular elimination, etc.  Do you see the picture?

This newsletter is one that you will want to print out and read again and again.  If you don't get anything else from the newsletter, please know that good health and well-being is within everyone's reach and is very doable no matter what condition you find yourself in today.  You must really want it and be willing to put forth whatever effort is necessary to achieve your goals.  Maybe it is time to employ "positive quitting" in trying fad diet after fad diet, medication after medication, diet pill after diet pill, doctor after doctor, etc.  Desire - Discipline - Determination.  This is what it takes to be a winner.  We all have it in us to do what it takes. Begin Today. No Excuses. Just Do It!  Very soon you will be able to say, "Yes, I am healthy and it feels FANTASTIC!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Just The Facts

Consider the following:

  • Americans spent $117 billion in obesity-related economic costs in 2003
  • An estimated 300,000 Americans die each year from fat-related causes
  • In 2000, Americans spent more than $110 billion on fast food alone
  • Americans now spend more money on fast food than on higher education, personal computers, computer software or new cars.
  • Americans spend up to an estimated $50 billion a year on diet and weight loss
  • The food industry has a $30 billion advertising budget
  • McDonald's reportedly spent $500 million on one ad campaign, while the National Cancer Institute spends about $1 million a year to promote eating five daily servings of fruits and vegetables
  • Junk food advertisements target children as young as 3 years old
  • Junk food marketers spent an estimated $15 billion in 2002 solely on marketing aimed at children
  • 1 in 3 Americans will have some form of cancer in their lifetime.
  • One in six Americans is either pre-diabetic or diabetic.
  • Sixty-six percent of Americans are overweight.
  • Over ten million Americans are taking anti-depressants.
  • 50 percent of people over 85 will have Alzheimer’s Disease.
  • Someone dies of heart disease every 34 seconds.
  • One in six Americans suffers from an Anxiety Disorder.
  • 41 million Americans have pre-diabetes, high enough blood sugar to dramatically increase their risk of getting the disease.
  • Iatrogenic (doctor-induced) disease has replaced heart disease as the #1 killer of Americans.

FACTS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT CANCER

One in three people will contract cancer, and one in four will die from the disease.

Within five years, cancer will surpass heart disease as the leading cause of death, according to the American Hospital Association.

In 1994, 1.2 million new cancer cases were added to the more than eight million people in the U.S. who have already been diagnosed with cancer. We are not winning the war on cancer as these numbers continue to grow.

Since 1950, the overall cancer incidence has increased by 44 percent; the incidence of breast cancer and male colon cancer by about 60 percent; testis, prostate and kidney by 100 percent; and other cancers, such as malignant melanoma, multiple myeloma and some lymphomas, by over 100 percent.

The estimated annual cost of cancer to the United States, excluding incalculable psychosocial costs, is $110 billion, approximately 2 percent of the GNP.

An estimated 80 million people have health insurance insufficient to cover the costs of a catastrophic illness such as cancer.

Annual production rates for synthetic, carcinogenic and other industrial chemicals exploded from 1 billion pounds in 1940 to more than 500 billion pounds annually during the 1980s.*

Recent National Cancer Institute studies have linked: non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and exposure to solvents, oils, and greases; elevated risks for multiple myelorna among men and women employed in the textile and plastic industries; lymphoma among laboratory workers at the U.S. Department of Agriculture; and lung cancer among workers who developed silicosis.

The rates of certain types of cancer among some industrial workers are up to 10 times higher than in the general population. Children of workers handling chemical carcinogens have sharply increase cancer rates. For example, the risks of childhood leukemia are increased two-to-five-fold if, during their mother's pregnancies, their fathers worked with spray paints, dyes or pigments.

Some 75 percent of all cancers develop in those over 55, but notable exceptions include childhood leukemia, testicular and brain cancers - which mainly strike young people and have been increasing at an alarming rate, particularly among peak age groups For example, there has been an approximate 300 percent increase in testicular cancer among those aged 25-34 since the 1950s.

During the 1990s, nearly 2 million women will have been diagnosed with breast cancer and 460,000 will have died. Between 1950 and 1989, the incidence of breast cancer increased by 53 percent.

There has been an approximate doubling in lung cancer rates in recent decades among non- smokers. A wide range of occupational exposures and urban air pollution have been shown to cause lung cancer.

"Occupational studies have played a major role in identifying well-established environmental carcinogens, such as asbestos, benzene, arsenic, aromatic amines, coal tars, vinyl chloride, chromium, and wood dust." Measures of Progress Against Cancer - Cancer Prevention, Significant Accomplishments 1982-1992, The National Cancer Institute.

"It is well established that primary prevention is the most effective means of disease control. This is particularly true of cancer." Measures of Progress Against Cancer - Cancer Prevention.

"Lack of appreciation of the potential hazards of environmental and food source contaminants, and laws, policies, and regulations protecting and promoting tobacco use worsen the cancer problem and drive up health care costs." Cancer At a Crossroads: A Report to Congress for the Nation, National Cancer Advisory Board, September 1994.

"While individuals have a responsibility to change high-risk behavior, government and society have responsibilities to identify and prevent workplace and environmental hazards, restrict advertising of unsafe products, require accurate product labeling, and provide culturally targeted education about cancer risk and prevention." Cancer At a Crossroads

"The elimination or reduction of exposure to carcinogenic agents is a priority in the prevention of cancer. We are just beginning to understand the full range of health effects resulting from the exposure to occupational and environmental agents and factors." Cancer at a Crossroads

"We spend close to $100 billion a year on cancer treatment in this country. If we are going to get on top of this problem, we absolutely have to focus more on prevention." Dr Devra Lee Davis, senior adviser to the assistant secretary for health and human services. Washington Post, February 14.

"Everyone should know that the 'war on cancer' is largely a fraud." Linus Pauling, two-time Nobel laureate.

"No one should think that because the [Environmental Protection Agency] allows it, a pesticide is safe. No pesticide is safe. They're designed to kill living organisms. They should be treated with respect -including the warnings on the label." Jerome Blondell, EPA's pesticides office. USA Today, February 27,1995.

Don't base your future on what your past has offered you. How you respond
to things makes a big difference. That's why the Bible says not to let the
sun go down on your wrath. NEVER go to bed with issues not resolved in your
own mind and heart. As much as it's possible live peaceably with all men.
Don't go on to another day if there is any unforgiveness from a previous day
of your life. Your mind will weave it into a straight-jacket on you!
You don't have to accept what somebody has done to forgive them. You are
simply choosing to allow God to handle the results of the offense and you
are freeing yourself from the bondage and life-altering power that
unforgiveness brings.

Ten Steps To Getting Healthy & Staying Healthy                                                                                          By: Dr. Loretta Lanphier

Below Are the Ten Steps That You Can Take Now To Begin Your Path To A Healthy Body:

1)  Total Body Detoxification (Liver/Gallbladder - Digestive Tract - Kidneys - Parasites - Heavy Metal)

Before you can begin to get the body healthy you must take one step back and get the body clean.  It makes no sense to put organic food and supplements into a body that is clogged with toxic food and chemicals.  You want everything that you put into you body to be able to be absorbed, transported and utilized to the fullest.  Ideally, a total body cleanse should be done twice yearly.  Most people start to feel better and lighter immediately after cleansing.  If your healthcare practitioner does not insist on detoxifying and cleansing your body before handing out supplementation and diet then you may want to look for another practitioner.

2)  Diet

#1 Recommendation:  Eat as close to nature as possible.

We have found that using a combination diet works well with the body's rhythms.  It also will allow the digestive tract to rest at the appropriate times of the day.  Organic fruits and vegetables (free of pesticides and herbicides) are the best options.  Farmer's markets are also a good choice.  Remember that you can always grow your own fruits and vegetables and is probably the "safest" option. Becauses so many of our fruits and vegetables are genetically modified it is best to stay away from grocery store produce.  Free-range, grass fed, organic meat is preferred.  Try not to make meat the focal point of your meal.  We suggest that you eat meat 4-5 times weekly or less.

Eliminate the following from your diet: White sugar, white flour, margarine, hydrogenated oils, grocery store dairy, all processed foods (if you can't pronounce the ingredients, don't eat it), grocery store meat, lunchmeat, grains, tap water, aspartame, splenda, soda, fruit juice, candy, pastries, ice cream, coffee, tea.

3) Water

Water, which makes up over 70% of the body, has the most influence in determining how the body remains healthy.  For health to continue, the body requires that its water be clean and free from contamination.

The Nationwide Food Consumption Surveys have indicated that the majority of the population may be moderately dehydrated. Several factors may increase the likelihood of chronic, mild dehydration, including a poor thirst mechanism, dissatisfaction with the taste of water, consumption of caffeine, carbonated beverages and alcohol, exercise and environmental conditions.  Dehydration of as little as 2% loss of body weight results in impaired physiological and performance responses.  Water consumption can have an effect on the risk of urinary stone disease, cancers of the breast, colon and urinary tract, childhood and adolescent obesity, mitral valve prolapse, salivary gland function, and overall health. (Kleiner 1999).

We suggest that you drink distilled water (glass bottles) with added organic, raw apple cider vinegar.  Add 2-3 tablespoons to one gallon of distilled water.  This should be your primary drink.  Try to drink half your body weight, in ounces, of water each day.  You may have up to 3 cups of organic, herbal tea daily.

We also recommend that you purchase shower filters for all bathrooms.  A 15 minute hot shower is the same as drinking 7 glasses of tap water.  You will also be breathing in chlorine gas from the hot water.  If you have a pool look into alternative ways to keep the water clean other than using chlorine.

4)  Supplementation

Because of the condition of our foods (soil depletion, little to none soil-based micro-organisms, etc.) we do not get the vitamins and minerals that we once did.  A pound of spinach, today, has much less vitamins and minerals than it did 30 years ago.  Remember that all vitamins and supplements are not created equal.  Do your researh or have a healthcare professional recommend brands that are manufactured under the purest of standards.  They should be organic with little to no excipients.  Most people need the following daily:

Daily Organic Multi-Vitamin/Mineral Supplement
Enzymes
B-Complex
Vitamin E (complete tocopherols and tocotrienols)
Antioxidant
Green Food
Unrefined, organic coconut oil  (Essential Fatty Acids)

Our e-book, Optimum Health Strategies...Doing What Works, goes into depth about recommended supplementation and therapeutic dosages. We have researched thousands of supplements.  No one company has the "best" in all supplementation.

5)  Lymphatic Drainage

Your lymphatic system provides a drainage path for toxic chemicals. If it is blocked or congested it can affect your health. The lymphatic system also has an important role for immune system function. The lymph nodes contain cells that engulf and destroy foreign matter that is brought to them in the circulating fluid. The nodes contain lymphocytes or white blood cells that guard against invading bacteria. It is required for us to make sure the fluid is flowing freely. There are several methods to get the lymph system moving including skin brushing, mini-trampoline and deep breathing techniques.

6) Sleep

It is important to retire to bed early (sundown or before 10:00 PM at the latest) in order to receive the beneficial regenerative electro-magnetic fields of the earth. Sleeping 2 to 5 hours before 12:00 midnight enables our bodies to increase the natural healing powers and immune system, necessary to restore health.  It also increases the flushing effect of the elimination process that starts in the morning during the elimination cycle. Sleep in complete darkness or as close as possible. When light hits the eyes, it disrupts the sleep rhythm of the pineal gland and production of melatonin and seratonin. There also should be as little light in the bathroom as possible if you get up in the middle of the night. Lack of sleep has been linked to obesity.  So turn off the TV and the computer and go to bed!

7) Physical & Emotional Stresses

Throughout history, emotions have been examined as a possible culprit in the creation of illness. Recent research in the area of "psychoneuroimmunology" indicates a direct correlation between stress and the functioning of the physical body, including the immune system. As ongoing research is revealing, repressed emotions can frequently lead to stress—which, in turn, can lead to disease.  As Dr. Maté wrote in The Globe and Mail: “When we have been prevented from learning how to say no, our bodies may end up saying it for us.” When emotions are repressed, this inhibition disarms the body’s defenses against illness. And, in some people, these defenses go awry, destroying the body rather than protecting it.

8)  Exercise

Physical exercise is mandatory for good health and weight regulation. Exercise improves both your mental and physical health reducing stress, depression and anxiety. The benefits of aerobic exercise include improved cardiovascular endurance, circulation, increased energy, fat loss, muscle strength and flexibility. Exercise increases the size of your arteries, prevents fat from clogging your arteries and helps prevent blood clots. A strong heart does not have to work so hard so this reduces your risk of heart disease. Regular exercise also increases your HDL (good) cholesterol and helps lower your total cholesterol levels. Exercise also helps lower your blood pressure. Your lungs will also benefit from exercise as they become stronger so that activities such as climbing stairs will not make you out of breath. Muscles that are not used become weak and inelastic, but aerobic exercise will help tone your body by increasing muscle size, strength and flexibility while burning fat. Exercise can also help make you more productive, so choose something that you enjoy and stick with it.

We suggest that you exercise 20-30 minutes every day.  Try to include some weight-bearing exercise at least 3 times weekly.  Walking while carrying hand-weights (3-5 lbs) is one of the best way to get whole-body benefit.

9)  Sunshine

Due to 90% of the population spending the majority of time indoors, most of us suffer from what John Ott refers to as Mal-illumination Syndrome. Most of us are starved for the frequencies and colors that comprise sunlight. Light starvation symptoms include irritability, fatigue, illness, lowered immune system functioning, insomnia or hypersomnia, depression, alcoholism and suicide, vitamin D deficiency, calcium deficiency, neurotransmitter and neurohormonal deficiencies.

Try to get 20-30 minutes worth of sunlight on as much of the body as is legal every single day. Do not use sunscreen lotion.  A quick walk in the morning or evening will be sufficient.  For those in the northern climates it is advised to install full-spectrum lighting in your office and in your home.

10)  Clean Up Your Environment

The EPA informs us that 6 out of 10 buildings/homes are "sick" and that indoor air quality is the United States' number one environmental health problem.  A recent study by the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture found that ionizing a room led to 52% less dust in the air, and 95% less bacteria in the air (since many of the pollutants found in the air reside on floating dust particles).

Virtually ALL synthetic cosmetics, skin care and body care products have toxic chemical ingredients which may be damaging to your health.  We must realize that everything that we put on our skin is absorbed into the body.  Chemical build up and cause disease.  Be safe - Choose CERTIFIED ORGANIC chemical-free products.  Make sure that your deoderant is aluminum-free.  Use toothpastes that are fluoride-free.

Detrimental energies from electromagnetic fields emitted from high tension wires, industrial radar, microwave beams, electric current, computers, cell phones, televisions, fluorescent lights and other electrical appliances have been found to be dangerous to mental and physical health.  When an individual sleeps or works for extensive periods within electromagnetic frequency zones, these energies create a constant source of stress (altering body polarity) which can lead to fatigue, frustration, tension and illness.  Signs of exposure may include drowsiness, chronic aches and pains, sleep disorders, irritability, low energy and general malaise and may lead to more serious health situations such as cancer.  Consider purchasing EMF protectors for your computer and cell phones.  Throw your microwave away.  It radiates your food.

Harmful Ingredients & Chemicals In Use Everyday

We are always told to read the label. Ok, so you read the label. How far ahead are you? Most of us don't know what most of the ingredients are on a label. Take toothpaste for example. The disclaimer on the tubes that I have read say to call poison control if ingested. Now I imagine that is for children but why? I was shown you can use backing soda to brush your teeth and it works just as well and is natural although it does not have the sweet flavor of typical toothpaste, but what cost do we pay for flavor and a product that is dangerous to a certain degree? Do we have any idea of what is good or bad for us? What about your personal care products? Do you know what ingredients really work or what ingredients may or have shown to cause cancer? Probably not. In fact if you read enough labels you may see enough common ingredients that you might think they are ok because they are in so many products. This is usually not the case.

If you take the time to do a little research you will find that many common chemicals in the products you use every day are cancer causing. The truth is the home is a haven for cancer. According to Michael Dufresne, a leading researcher in environmental cancers, "54% of women working in the home are at a higher risk of developing cancer than women working outside the home." The reason? Chemicals in every day products.

Dufresne, a researcher professor at the University of Windsor, who is also a research coordinator for Cancer Care Ontario and a member of the US Barbara Karmanos Cancer Institute, says that the presence of cancer-linked chemicals in cosmetic and hair products, toothpaste, shaving cream, furniture polish, dish washing liquids and other household products should raise major concerns.

Dufresne said his greatest worry is the lack of information given to the public about products they use every day, more so because they are being used in concert.

He said "people are blindly being led in the use of these products, they assume they are safe, and they are not." He added, "scientists are discovering that exposure to a variety of trace chemicals over the span of a lifetime is dangerous."

Did you know that the US Public Interest Group reports there are more that 100,000 synthetic chemicals in use? Scary yes, but even scarier according to Dufresne is that unlike cigarettes there are virtually no warning labels on cosmetics and virtually no FDA regulations policing them.

What about price. If the product is expensive it must be good for you right? Uh Uh. Dufresne's own study showed that "men and women think they are safer if they pay more, but there is absolutely no relationship between cost and safety."

One product that saved farmers millions of dollars was DDT. The U.S. government outlawed the use of the pesticide DDT because of the cancer causing dangers research has proven. Unfortunately most people are unaware that many countries from which we import out fruits and vegetables still use DDT because their respective governments aren't worried about the effects since the produce is exported to the US. Monsanto, one of the major chemical producers, manufactures DDT and sells it abroad. Why? Because it works so well, it is cheap to produce and of course it is good for the bottom line. Profit. Unless you grow your food yourself or buy organic produce, you may never really know what you are adding to your diet. The choice is yours! As the adage goes...buyer beware

So what can we do about it?

Buy organic!!... or we all become farmers, or we demand to know more about our products so that we can make the choice for ourselves!

The main reason most chemicals show up in so many products is because they are inexpensive, simple and effective—and the government allows them to continue to be used by virtually every cosmetics and personal care product manufacturer in the country. A lot of them were being used before the Food and Drug Administration began regulating the use of dangerous chemicals in such products and they were "grandfathered in," and, at the time, seemed ok.

Below is a listing of some of those chemicals, their properties, and their other uses. With this list in hand, the next time you go to the drug store or even the grocery store, or your own household cabinets you can examine the labels on every product you have to see if some of them appear in the ingredient list, and they usually do.

When you find these ingredients on the label the wisest course is to put it back on the shelf and look for something that does not contain these chemicals.

Alpha Hydroxy Acids -- This is one of the most touted chemicals there is in the cosmetic industry today. It is supposed to make your skin look younger and remove wrinkles. It does that, all right. But at the cost of prematurely exposing immature skin through the removal of the tough outer layer. It exposes young, not fully developed skin to the harsh aging and damaging environmental agents. The "smoothing" of the skin is temporary and regular use of AHAs could actually make your skin age much faster. Your outer layer of skin is your first, and most important layer of defense, and AHAs work to destroy it.

Collagen & Elastin -- This is derived from small animal skins and ground up chicken feet. Another film that may suffocate and over moisturize the skin. Cosmetic manufacturers have heralded it (collagen) as a new "wonder ingredient," but according to medical experts, it cannot affect the skin's own collagen when applied topically. Elastin is much like collagen in that it cannot be absorbed by the skin and merely provides a suffocating coating on the skin's surface.

Imidazolidinyl Urea and Diazolidinyl Urea — These are the most commonly used preservatives after the parabens. They are well established as a primary cause of contact dermatitis (American Academy of Dermatology). Two trade names for these chemicals are Germall II and Germall 115. Neither of the Germall chemicals have a good antifungal, and must be combined with other preservatives. Germall 115 releases formaldehyde at just over 10°. These chemicals are toxic.

Methyl and Propyl and Butyl and Ethyl Paraben — Used as inhibitors of microbial growth and to extend shelf life of products. Widely used even though they are known to be toxic. Have caused many allergic reactions and skin rashes. Methyl paraben combines benzoic acid with the methyl group of chemicals. Highly toxic.

Petrolatum — I see this on lip products from time to time, which is humorous to me because they're usually advertised as protecting the lips from sunburn, chapping and so forth. Petrolatum is mineral oil jelly, and mineral oil causes a lot of problems when used on the skin photosensitivity (i.e., promotes sun damage), and it tends to interfere with the body's own natural moisturizing mechanism, leading to dry skin and chapping. You are being sold a product that creates the very conditions it claims to alleviate. Manufacturers use petrolatum because it is unbelievably cheap.

Propylene Glycol — Ideally this is a vegetable glycerin mixed with grain alcohol, both of which are natural. Usually it is a synthetic petrochemical mix used as a humectant. Has been known to cause allergic and toxic reactions.

PVP/VA Copolymer — A petroleum-derived chemical used in hairsprays, wavesets and other cosmetics. It can be considered toxic, since particles may contribute to foreign bodies in the lungs of sensitive persons.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate — This synthetic substance is used in shampoos for its detergent and foam-building abilities. It causes eye irritations, skin rashes, hair loss, scalp scurf similar to dandruff, and allergic reactions. It is frequently disguised in pseudo-natural cosmetics with the parenthetic explanation "comes from coconut."

Stearalkonium Chloride — A chemical used in hair conditioners and creams. Causes allergic reactions. Stearalkonium chloride was developed by the fabric industry as a fabric softener, and is a lot cheaper and easier to use in hair conditioning formulas than proteins or herbals, which do help hair health. Toxic. Many companies are adding it to their natural progesterone creams (which automatically disqualifies the term "natural").

Synthetic Colors — The synthetic colors used to supposedly make a cosmetic "pretty" should be avoided at all costs, along with hair dyes. They will be labeled as FD&C or D&C, followed by a color and a number. Example: FD&C Red No. 6 / D&C Green No. 6. Synthetic colors are believed to be cancer-causing agents. If a cosmetic contains them, don't use it.

Synthetic Fragrances — The synthetic fragrances used in cosmetics can have as many as 200 ingredients. There is no way to know what the chemicals are, since on the label it will simply say "Fragrance." Some of the problems caused by these chemicals are headaches, dizziness, rash, hyperpigmentation, violent coughing, vomiting, skin irritation by a cosmetic that has the word "Fragrance" on the ingredients label.

Triethanolamine — Often used in cosmetics to adjust the pH, and used with many fatty acids to convert acid to salt (stearate), which then becomes the base for a cleanser. TEA causes allergic reactions including eye problems, dryness of hair and skin, and could be toxic if absorbed into the body over a long period of time.

Bentonite -- Used in facial masks. But it can have sharp edges that scratch the skin. It forms films that effectively trap toxins and carbon dioxide in the skin, suffocating it.  Bentonite has been reported to contain aluminum.

Lanolin -- Touted as being able to penetrate skin better than other oils, even though there is little scientific proof of this. It can cause allergic contact skin rashes and may contain pesticides used on sheep and wool.

Did you know that over 400 "foreign" chemicals have been identified in human tissue? That more than 500 chemicals can be found under the kitchen sink, in the bathrooms, and in the laundry rooms of the average home? That about 100 pounds of hazardous waste are in storage in basements and garages in the average home?

Did you also know that approximately 3,000 chemicals are intentionally added to our foods and that 700 different chemicals have been found in drinking water? Their are also 884 neurotoxic chemical compounds that are used in cosmetic, personal care, and perfume industry products. Are they safe? At what levels and in what combinations? Who is really willing to take that chance? For those of us that have either gone thru an illness or a loss of someone close to us, we have first hand knowledge of the toll it takes on ourselves and the family. And what if it could have been changed just by some simple little things in our lives?

What these products can do by themselves, let alone if they are used in combination with each other? Those types of studies are not done very often because of the thousands of possible combinations and costs, but should we just ignore that and hope that it is ok, not if we truly want to ourselves and our family to be as safe as we can make it. The funny thing is that it will not take much effort except a change in our life style. It will require change and a new commitment to ones life style, but being ill or not healthy is the one of the biggest inconveniencies there is.

According to the founder of the Response Team for the Chemically Injured, at least one study from the National Cancer Institute suggests that as many as 98 percent of all cancers may be linked to chemical exposures.

WARNING LABELS: They are appearing on more and more personal care products every day, but we just ignore them and keep on rubbing irritants into our skins, having our children (and ourselves) brush their teeth with dangerous chemicals and use mouthwashes that are not safe.

The labels warn us not to swallow. And if you do, to contact the Poison Control Center if we swallow too much. Other labels warn us of the danger of prolonged contact with the skin of products that are designed to be rubbed into the skin.

Learn the names of these harmful chemicals, and stop ignoring the warning labels. Start reading the ingredient lists (purchase a magnifying glass and take it with you to the store---ever wonder "why" the ingredient list is in such small print?), and if these harmful chemicals are listed, put it back on the shelf. You may live longer and with fewer health problems by doing just this one thing.

The Best Way To Use Meat InThe Diet                                                                                                                 By:  Dr. Elson M. Hass

There are many philosophical and health reasons for not consuming modern meats, at least in large amounts. The main problem is that meat cultivated today is not like the wild animals on which our ancestors lived. First, they used meat for feasts and special occasions, not as a main food. Also, the free-ranging animals such as deer, moose, bison, and cattle had a much lower fat content than present-Day animals. They lived naturally only on vegetation and were not force-fed on lots of grains with less activity. These practices have greatly increased the fat content of animals from about 5 percent with only 2-3 percent saturated fats (cattle have slightly more) to the modern-Day levels of five or six times that. These extra amounts of fat in cultivated meats may make the difference, especially in a less active culture, between disease and health.

Also, like chicken, cattle now-a-days live in close quarters and may be fed more food and more stimulants and antibiotics to prevent infection. Hormones were used commonly for many years, but they are hopefully being reduced due to new laws. And the meat we call veal comes from poor little imprisoned baby cows whose lack of activity keeps their muscles weak, undeveloped, and very tender. They are fed an iron-deficient slosh to keep them anemic, which also makes their muscles (meat) white.

  1. Eat meat only in moderation. This means less meat than the average American now eats. Try more vegetarian dishes.
  2. When eating meats, try the leaner cuts. For most cuts, trim the excess fat.
  3. Especially avoid all the cured meats, such as bacon, ham, lunchmeat, sausage, and franks, because of their higher fat content, high amounts of sodium, and cancer-causing chemicals such as nitrates.
  4. When using meats, try them as smaller parts of other dishes, such as casseroles and big salads, or cooked with vegetables such as onions, garlic, carrots, or greens. This helps the meat go a long way in both cost and health.
  5. Add more fish to the diet in place of red-meat dishes. This will help cut cholesterol and fats and protect us from cardiovascular diseases. (Use cold water fish & consume no more than 2x's weekly because of mercury contamination.)
  6. Increase intake of some of the anticancer and disease-protecting nutrients, such as zinc, vitamin E, vitamin C, beta-carotene, and selenium.
  7. Eat more fiber foods, such as whole grains and vegetables. This also balances our diet and is protective against the degenerating diseases.
  8. Exercise regularly.
  9. Do not use meat as a dietary staple. If it is consumed, use it as a special treat or celebration.
  10. It is not necessary to eat meat at all. Try going without it for a month and see how you feel.

(COMMENT:  Because of the pesticides and herbicides, the probability of GMO feed, and the use of antibiotics and hormones in most animals, we recommend that you consume only organic, free-range meat.)

7 Things Happy People Know How To Do                                                                                                                  By: Kathy Gates

Ever wondered about those people who seem to be able to always roll with the punches and be happy no matter what the circumstances (we all know at least one)? Are they out of touch with reality, or do they know something that you don't?

I was curious, so I began to ask "happy" people what they thought their secret was. Here's some of the answers I got. See if using one of them in your own life might help you be a happier person too.

1. Happy people are in control of their lives. They choose where they live, where they work, how much they smile, what they eat. They choose what time they get up, how they spend their money, when they'll balance the checkbook. Don't underestimate how choosing the small things in your life creates an environment that you want instead of one dictated by circumstance.

2. Happy people know that their bodies are connected to their minds, and they must take care of both. Eating better, sleeping enough, getting some exercise all ties into a happier frame of mind. Watch what goes into your body as well as what goes into your mind.

3. Happy people don't treat life as a win-lose game. Instead, they know how to treat life as a learning experience. Very few things are written in stone. If something's not working, try something different. Don't keep beating your head against the wall just because "that's the way you've always done it."

4. Happy people know how to live in the present. Bad things have happened to everyone, but why would you want to relive a bad experience over and over and over? Let the bad in your past go, and look to the good things that you can create in the present and the future.

5. Happy people expect that "life happens" (yeah I cleaned that up a bit). If you anticipate the best, yet prepare for the worst, you'll always be in the driver's seat. You won't get blindsided by a mistake or circumstance that you can't control. You won't feel helpless. You'll feel prepared.

6. Happy people create a step by step plan. Waiting for things to happen to you might work. Including the lottery in your long term financial plans might work. But don't underestimate the power of small steps in your life. Just saving one dollar a day equals a debt free Christmas at the end of the year.

7. Happy People know how to move on from mistakes by learning and looking ahead. Don't stop in the middle of what you're doing and focus on the mistake. It will paralyze you from moving forward. Move on by focusing on where you need to be, on what's important at that time. Analyze the mistake later when you can learn constructively from it, not beat yourself up about it.
