Hi [fname]
February is the month most
associated with love and the heart. In our fast-paced society we sometimes
find it difficult to take the time to cultivate true friendships and relationships.
Most friendships are superficial at best and many people have a fear of allowing
anyone to get too “close”. We now categorize friendships as “high
or low maintenance” and most of us prefer the “low” maintenance
friendships because it lessens our responsibility to nothing more than a quick
phone call, here and there.
Friendships are healthy, even the high maintenance ones. We all need people
in our lives who believe in us and spur us on, who know our faults and still
choose to be around us, and who love us unconditionally. These people are the “apples
of gold” in our lives and are placed there for a reason. Since February
is the month for “issues of the heart” don’t’ forget
to acknowledge your love and appreciation for your friends. A phone call, handwritten
note, e-card, planned lunch or a “just dropped by to say Hi” will
convey importance and love to them and will bring health to your spirit.
We are excited to announce that the new OAW Affiliate Program will launch February
13, 2006. If you have always wanted a hi-tech health store, you will now have
that opportunity along with the ability to add to your income. We encourage
you to sign-up and help us get the “best of the best” products
out to people who really need them.
Also, don’t forget to take a look at the new products that we have recently
added: Bio-D-Mulsion (Vitamin
D-3), Yamoa
Powder,
and our new Health
Combo Packs which
allow you to save even more on your purchases.
Enjoy the February edition of Advanced Health & Wellness. We invite you
to pour a cup of herbal tea, get comfortable and spend some time with us. You
will be glad you did.
Happy Valentine’s Day to
all the OAW family and new friends. We appreciate your continued loyalty and
support and send our love and blessings to each
of you.

Mineral
Level in Meat and Milk Plummet Over 60 Years |
By
Felicity Lawrence
The mineral content
of milk and popular meats has fallen significantly in the past 60 years,
according to a new analysis of government records of the chemical composition
of everyday food. The research looked at government tables published in
1940, and again in 2002, in the nutritional bible, The Composition of Foods,
to establish levels of important minerals in dairy products and meat before
the second world war and today.

Yet 57 percent of
the nearly 4,000 adults polled also considered themselves overweight.
How can this be? Either the healthy eaters aren't being active enough,
or we all have different definitions of "healthy eating."

Fifteen
facts you probably never knew about vitamin D and sunlight exposure. |
Compiled
by Mike Adams
Based on an interview with Dr. Michael Holick, author, The
UV Advantage
Vitamin
D prevents osteoporosis, depression, prostate cancer, breast cancer,
and even effects diabetes and obesity. Vitamin D is perhaps the single
most underrated nutrient in the world of nutrition. Truth is, most people
don't know the real story on vitamin D and health. So here's an overview
taken from an interview between Mike Adams and Dr. Michael Holick.

· An
analysis of eight studies that looked into the impact of fruit and
vegetables on stroke showed that the more healthy foods people consumed,
the less likely they were to have a stroke, which is a leading cause
of disability and death.
· A
single 30-minute walk on a treadmill can give a temporary emotional
lift to patients diagnosed with major depressive disorder, the results
of a small study suggest. Researchers found that among 40 men and
women recently diagnosed with major
depression, those who spent just a half hour on a treadmill reported
a short-term improvement in energy and emotional well-being.
· A
recent 2-year trial of more than 250 men showed a statistically
significant correlation between testosterone levels and the incidence
of clinically diagnosed depression in males over age 55. Published
in a recent issue of the Archives of General Psychiatry, the
study found that men with testosterone deficiencies were nearly
THREE TIMES AS LIKELY to be depressed as those with healthy testosterone
levels.
· In
2000, the AHA recommended soy consumption based on studies
that indicated soy had a cholesterol-lowering effect. But when
further research began to contradict those findings, the AHA
launched a review of more than 20 soy studies. Results showed
that soy protein has no effect on HDL cholesterol, and a very
small effect on LDL cholesterol. In addition, researchers concluded
that soy does not reduce hot flashes and other menopausal symptoms,
nor does it prevent prostate, breast or uterine cancer.
· The
National Cancer Institute estimates that 38% of women will
be diagnosed with cancer in the U.S. during their lifetime.
Some 600,000 US women are diagnosed with cancer each year,
with breast cancer being the leading cause. Most menopausal
women are not deficient in estrogen (it's manufactured in the
fat cells) they are deficient in progesterone. Giving estrogen
allows for estrogen dominance which has been linked to breast
cancer as well as endometriosis, fibroid tumors and fibrocystic
breast disease. These women need bio-identical progesterone.
· While
a growing number of studies have shown a link between flavanol-rich
cocoa and cardiovascular health, scientists have now substantiated
a causal relationship between specific compounds present in
cocoa and cardiovascular health. Published January 19, 2006
in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the
United States of America (PNAS), this new study identifies
the flavanol, (-)epicatechin, as one of the bioactive nutrients
in cocoa that can improve the ability of blood vessels to relax.
· A
groundbreaking U.S. study on 17,000 girls found that 27 percent
of African-American and almost seven percent of Caucasian girls
had the onset of secondary sexual characteristics, i.e., either
breast development or pubic hair development, by the
age of seven. By the time the girls turned eight-years-old, 15 percent
of Caucasian girls and 50 percent of Afro-American girls were
starting puberty. Even more startling was the finding that
one percent of Caucasian and three percent of African-American
girls showed these characteristics by the age of three. Prior
to 1945, in the U.S., the age of 16 was considered normal for
the initiation of puberty, and today, in rural China, age 17-19
is the norm.
· Having
a good laugh can make stress melt away in an instant. Plus,
it decreases blood pressure and heart rate, increases oxygen
in the blood and creates an enzyme that helps protect your
stomach from the effects of stress.
· A
study indicates that Tamiflu and Relenza, the two antiviral
flu drugs intended to be lynchpin of the world-wide defense
against the flu, are ineffective against seasonal flu outbreaks,
and may not be sufficient to combat an epidemic or pandemic.
· Walnuts
have not only joined the ranks of smart foods, they are
now at the top of the class. A recent study conducted by
the University of Texas Health Science Center found that
walnuts contain a significant amount of melatonin, a hormone
that protects our cells against free radical damage (Nutrition,
2005, vol. 21, no. 9).
