(WebMD) The herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1), which causes cold sores and can cause genital herpes, may have met its match in chamomile oil. Scientists in Germany pitted chamomile oil, anise oil, dwarf-pine oil, manuka oil, and lemon oil against HSV-1 in test tubes. Manuka comes from the same plant family as the tea tree. Of all the oils that were tested, chamomile oil was particularly good at targeting HSV-1, and it probably wouldn't cause irritation if applied to the skin, note Schnitzler and colleagues.

The acidic nature of vinegar helps dissolve hard water spots, cut through mildew and dissolves grime. The addition of Orange and/or Lemon oil boosts vinegar’s germ-fighting power and adds a terrific fresh aroma. Simply add up to 10 drops of essential oil to each ounce of equal parts vinegar and water.

Federal health officials warned that all prescription sleeping pills may sometimes cause sleep-driving. People taking such drugs as Ambien have reported getting up in the middle of the night and going for a drive, with no recollection of doing so.

The Food and Drug Administration issued strict new warnings regarding the overuse of widely prescribed anemia drugs. The drugs include darbepoetin alfa, sold as Aranesp by Amgen, epoetin alfa, sold as Epogen by Amgen, and as Procrit by Johnson & Johnson. Recent studies suggested the drugs might cause heart problems or hasten the death of cancer patients.

Obese patients who undergo weight-loss surgeries such as gastric bypass can develop a rare but serious brain condition linked to vitamin deficiency. Wernicke encephalopathy is caused by lack of thiamin, a B vitamin, and leads to confusion, decreased coordination, and visual changes. Doctors who perform weight-loss surgeries have known about this post-op complication for years, yet patients seem to be unaware of the significance in taking vitamin supplements after surgery.

Most Americans are still not eating anywhere near the recommended amounts of fruits and vegetables. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that only 32.6% of adults are eating fruit two or more times per day, and only 27.2% are eating vegetables three or more times a day. Most Americans are aware of the benefits of eating fruits and vegetables, but many are unaware they are putting themselves at risk of heart disease, cancer, and other health problems.

Scientists have found that chronic intake of fluoride can seriously affect the gastric mucosa (the cells that excrete the fluid which is required to aid digestion and to enable the comfortable passage of food through the bowel). Healthy cells are covered in tiny hairs called microvilli. Fluoride-damaged cells show broken microvilli and, eventually, an unhealthy "cracked clay" appearance. These cells are so damaged that normal function is impaired, leading to pain and suffering - "irritable bowel syndrome."

Just 15 minutes a day of running around might be enough to keep children from becoming obese. British and US researchers found that kids who exercised more were less likely to be obese and that short bursts of intense activity seemed to be the most helpful. Children who did 15 minutes a day of moderate exercise were 50% less likely than inactive children to be obese.

Phthalates, a class of chemicals used in some plastic food packaging and linked to reproductive problems, has now been implicated in causing abdominal obesity and insulin resistance in adult males.

The first GM food crop containing human genes will likely be approved for commercial production shortly. It is a strain of rice that produces some of the human proteins found in breast milk and saliva, which manufacturer Ventria Biosciences believes could be used to treat children with diarrhea. Ventria has already been given preliminary approval to grow the rice on more than 3,000 acres in Kansas. Until now, pharmaceutical plants with human-origin genes, which present possible health risks if they become mixed with regular food crops, have been restricted to small test plots.
