Oasis Advanced Wellness would like to extend our heartfelt sympathies and prayers to the families who lost loved ones during the recent Virginia Tech Shootings. Certainly this should be a time of reflection and realization that none of us are promised tomorrow. In the coming months, let’s continue to remember these families in our prayers as they try to put some normalcy back into their lives.
While there is never a way to explain the behavior that was acted out this last week on the campus of VT, we must realize that anger, revenge and depression can be just as deadly. I have seen suppressed emotions and anger literally wreck havoc with the body, eventually leading to serious disease and illness. What makes matters worse, people who are anxious, angry, frustrated, stressed, grieving, lonely, or depressed are much more likely to take on unhealthy behaviors such as smoking, overeating, working extensive hours, abuse of drugs and alcohol—in an attempt to deal with their pain and anguish. This, as we know, only adds to the risk of health problems.
The good news is that there ARE answers in how to deal with negative emotions and emotional stresses. Eating a healthy diet, taking walks in the sunshine, taking on a new hobby, getting a pet, laughing, Pilates, yoga, talking to a trusted friend, spouse or pastor, taking at least 30 minutes every day to listen to soothing music, reading up-lifting and encouraging books and keeping the body hydrated and healthy will do wonders in lifting and healing a soul that is grieving and trying to make sense out of something to where there is no rhyme or reason.
While a college campus and a Virginia town begin the healing process from the aftermath of a horrendous crime, so must we all realize the importance of beginning the path of forgiveness. As Mark Twain once said, “Forgiveness is the fragrance that the violet sheds on the heal that has crushed it." Certainly we cannot control everything that happens in our lives or the lives of our loved ones; however, we can control how we react, individually, to every situation that comes our way. Let’s choose to forgive, love and live peacefully with all men. Let’s choose to live each day to the fullest and to daily count our many, many blessings.
We hope that you enjoy this April issue of Advanced Health & Wellness.

Smokers reported that drinking milk or water, or eating fruits and vegetables, worsened the taste of cigarettes. On the other hand, alcohol, coffee and meat enhanced the taste of cigarettes. These findings could lead to a diet that makes it easier to quit smoking.
The stress hormone epinephrine changes prostate and breast cancer cells in ways that may make them resistant to cell death. This means that emotional stress could both contribute to the development of cancer and reduce the effectiveness of cancer treatments.
The flavanol-type antioxidants abundant in raw cocoa and extra-dark chocolate are proven to help prevent artery-damaging oxidation of LDL cholesterol, enhance artery health, and reduce blood stickiness (platelet activation).
Constipated? It could be because you have an unsuspected food allergy. That certainly was the case for four women who had tried everything from laxatives to fibre supplements. But the moment they switched to an oligoantigenic diet – that’s one that avoids all foods suspected of causing an allergic reaction – their constipation cleared in 10 days. And when they switched back to their usual diet, which included wheat, cow’s milk, and egg, their constipation also returned. While they were constipated, all four women reported chronic anal itching, which cleared up while on the elimination diet.
MSG reactions have been reported to soaps, shampoos, hair conditioners, and cosmetics, where MSG is hidden in ingredients that include the words hydrolyzed," amino acids," and "protein."
Fifty percent of depressed and bipolar patients experience no improvement with antidepressants. Of those who find relief, half go off their "meds" because of the unbearable side effects: Psychiatric drugs often cause a 30- to 60-pound weight gain, 58 percent report some level of sexual dysfunction, 40 percent develop tics or muscle spasms from major tranquilizers, and significant numbers report increased agitation, depression, mania, or suicidal urges.
