Hotels are being booked, maps are making the “must get” shopping list and airline ticket purchases are being compared with the high cost of gasoline. With summer officially just around the corner many families are planning and discussing the destination for their annual vacation. Everyone needs a time to rest, relax and recuperate from the stresses of everyday life. Vacations are important for our emotional as well as the physical well-being. While it can be very tempting to also take a vacation from your healthy lifestyle, you will feel better and enjoy yourself more if you continue your health habits while on vacation. Along this line you will not want to miss reading Dr. Lanphier’s article, How to Experience a Healthy Vacation, in which she gives some important and doable suggestions about creating a healthy vacation for you and your family.
Some of the OAW products that you will want to stock up on for summer vacation are: UV Natural Sunscreen and UV Natural Baby Sunscreen for chemical sun protection; NoBite for non-toxic bug repellent; XJ-1100 Ionic and UV Air Purifier and XJ-800 Car Ionizer for air purification in hotel rooms and vehicles; Wellness Water Carafe and Wellness Sport Bottle for clean drinking water at your finger-tips; Hydra-Tone™ and Oxy-Balm for after-sun care and dry skin; and Germ Fighter Spray for disinfecting hotel rooms and hands.
We also call your attention to the articles by Byron Richards on the current Dietary Supplements situation. Please read these articles and pass them on to friends, family and co-workers. It is imperative that we wake-up to the seriousness of this situation. We encourage you to write letters to your elected officials and speak to the owners of the health food stores that you frequent. Making up fliers to hand out or leave at stores is also encouraged. It is difficult to believe that we must be concerned with this in America—the land of freedom. However, our healthcare freedoms of choice are slowly but surely being taken from us and we MUST determine, for ourselves and our children, not to allow this travesty to happen.

Understanding The Threat To Dietary Supplements - Part One
The FDA has stepped-up its attack on dietary supplements in America. On May 14, 2007 the Supreme Court sided with the FDA by deciding not to hear the case of Nutraceutical v FDA, letting stand a federal appeals court ruling that permits the FDA to use drug-related risk/benefit analysis to determine if a nutrient is safe. Byron Richards gives us the truth in what is really happening to our health freedom.

Understanding The Threat To Dietary Supplements - Part Two
Senators were taken completely off guard by the public outrage and comments over the passing of bill S.1082 with language that will possibly be used to seriously harass dietary supplements by allowing the FDA to apply drug-related risk analysis to the safety of food and food ingredients (and thus dietary supplements).

After Oscar Ewing, Chief Counsel of the Aluminum Company of America (ALCOA) became head of the United States Public Health Service (USPHS) in 1947, he offered the American Dental Association strong inducements to back fluoridation. To this day the ADA is paid well for endorsements of fluoride products. Grants are awarded to produce studies that will show fluoride is safe. Scientists whose research shows negative effects from fluoride often find it difficult to get their findings published. (See 0-6: "The Difficulty of Research on Fluoridation", Natick Fluoridation Study Committee Report, 9/27/97).
Swedish researchers followed over 81,000 men and women and proved that you can reduce your risk of stomach cancer by 47% if you have a lot of vitamin A in your diet. But this wasn't the first time these researchers had these results. A few years back, they did another study that had similar findings. A diet full of carotenoid-rich, green leafy vegetables and roots reduces your risk of stomach cancer by at least 35% - and by as much as 57%.
A new health scare erupted over soft drinks amid evidence they may cause serious cell damage. Research from a British university suggests a common preservative, Sodium benzoate, found in drinks such as Fanta and Pepsi Max has the ability to switch off vital parts of DNA. Sodium benzoate has already been the subject of concern about cancer because when mixed with the additive vitamin C in soft drinks, it causes benzene, a carcinogenic substance. A Food Standards Agency survey of benzene in drinks last year found high levels in four brands which were removed from sale.
While Americans are still recovering from a scandal over poison pet foods imported from China, FDA inspectors report tainted food imports intended for American humans are being rejected with increasing frequency because they are filthy, are contaminated with pesticides and tainted with carcinogens, bacteria and banned drugs. Last month, like most months, China topped the list of countries whose products were refused by the FDA – and that list includes many countries, including Mexico and Canada, who export far more food products to the U.S. than China.
A new report came out that claims infant car seats may be full of toxic items such as bromine, chlorine and lead. According to an Ann Arbor Environmental Group, 30% of the 62 infant car seats tested had toxic levels of these chemicals (www.healthycar.org). Bromine is added to many items as a fire retardant. The European countries have phased out their use of bromine as a fire retardant because they think it is a toxic item. In the U.S.A., bromine is still used in massive amounts. It is found in carpeting, clothing, furniture (including baby furniture), drapery, mattresses, computers, TV’s, and many other items.

Steatosis (or fatty liver) is a common finding in biopsy of the human liver. Fatty liver is a condition in which fat accumulates within the liver cells (hepatocytes) without causing any specific symptoms. (Fatty liver is defined as either more than 5% of cells containing fat droplets or total lipid exceeding 5% of liver weight.) Choline is essential for the use of fats in the body. It comprises a large part of acetylcholine (a nerve signal carrier). Choline also stops fats from being deposited in the liver and helps move fats into the cells. Deficiency of choline can lead to degenerative diseases such as cirrhosis with associated conditions such as bleeding, kidney damage, hypertension (high blood pressure), cholesterolemia (high blood levels of cholesterol), atherosclerosis (cholesterol deposits in blood vessels), and arteriosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) (Glanze 1996).
