Hi [fname]
For many, school is out, vacation plans are made and the sand-and-surf
is calling. Vacation and time away from normal “duties” is
important for health—both emotional and physical. We all need
some down-time away from the normal activities and concerns of everyday
life. Vacations don’t have to be costly nor do they have to involve
traveling long distances—although a change of scenery often helps
to clear the mind and bring back focus. For those that do not have
the time or funds for an “all-in-all-get-away”, a week or weekend
of rest and relaxation at home can be just as effective, as long as you
make some rules. These rules should include only doing those things
around the house that you “want” to do and that make you feel
calm and relaxed. Some activities for a fun-filled home-vacation
may include getting out of the house to visit museums, parks, local beaches,
farmer’s markets, swimming pools, libraries, spas, etc, going to
an afternoon movie, brunch with an old friend, day at the spa, day at the
beach or lake or the ability to sit on your patio, eating cold watermelon
and reading a favorite book. Set your bedroom up like a hotel room
adding some fresh flowers and some soothing music. Add some essential
oil(s) to your bath water every evening. Enjoy walks in the park. Visit
quaint shops. Treat yourself to an evening dinner on your patio or
out with friends. Most people who live close to cities have never
fully taken advantage of all the sites and sounds. Search the Internet
for sites in your city that are attractive to tourists. Who knows—you
may actually have a more enjoyable and peaceful vacation re-discovering
the town where you live!
SUMMER CELEBRATION - OAW is excited to offer to our customers SUMMER

THE
new good-for-you meat won't be pork or grass-fed beef, and it won't be made
of soy. If the efforts of a few future-minded scientists succeed, it will taste
and look like old-fashioned meat — only it'll be raised in a lab, not on
a farm. Several groups of scientists are cultivating edible meat in dishes from
animal muscle cells. The technology, which involves choosing the right starter
cells, stimulating and fine-tuning their growth for taste, texture and nutrients,
has a way — a long way — to go before meat could hit supermarkets.
But these researchers insist it will be a more efficient way to produce a staple
of the American diet — and will make meat healthier to boot.

Women's
Pain and Discomfort from Premenstrual Syndrome May be Lessened
by Diet Changes and Natural Health Remedies
|
By
Alexis Black – NewsTarget.com
Headaches, bloating,
irritability, depression and fatigue are just a few of the unpleasant symptoms
of premenstrual syndrome, which affects millions of women every month. But fortunately,
PMS -- though widely believed to be a result of changes in hormone levels during
a woman's menstrual cycle -- is not entirely beyond a woman's control. Research
shows that diet and nutrition play a significant role in the severity of PMS
symptoms, and many women could ease their monthly bouts with discomfort simply
by changing their diets or taking nutritional supplements.

The Lax Laws That Could Allow Assembly of Deadly Virus DNA |
By
James Randerson, science correspondent
DNA sequences from
some of the most deadly pathogens known to man can be bought over the internet,
the Guardian has discovered. In an investigation which shows the ease with which
terrorist organisations could obtain the basic ingredients of biological weapons,
this newspaper obtained a short sequence of smallpox DNA. The deadly virus has
existed only in laboratories since being eradicated from the world's population
30 years ago.

How
Lice are Becoming Invincible |
By
Nigel Hawkes
THEY are the unwanted visitors that every mother dreads.
As a nation, we spend £30 million every year on lotions and potions to
rid our children of head lice. But the little critters must be mocking our efforts
for they have defeated most of what the chemist can throw at them.

Nonprofit
Groups, State Officials, Sue FDA To Ban Mercury Fillings
|
FDA, like all federal agencies must first consider
the environmental impact before allowing a product to be sold. It must
consider both the environmental harm – which for mercury fillings
is colossal – and alternatives. In this case, alternative nontoxic
materials do exist for any type of cavity. Modern dentists no longer use
mercury fillings. Today, too, Congresswoman Diane Watson (D-Calif.) and
Congressman Dan Burton (R-Ind.) presented HHS Secretary Mike Leavitt with
a letter calling for
an investigation of FDA on these grounds. (Contact: Bert Hammond, press
secretary to Congresswoman Watson, 202.225-7084.)

Rollout of Shingles Vaccine Planned After FDA's Okay |
By
Peggy Peck, May 30, 2006
The
FDA approved a shingles vaccine, and Merck said it is ready to accept physician
orders, with rapid shipment promised. Zostavax (zoster vaccine live) was okayed
by the agency for prevention
of herpes
zoster in patients 60 and older. An FDA review of the Zostavax clinical data
concluded that the vaccine was effective at curbing shingles pain but did not
significantly
reduce either
shingles-related
hospitalizations or death.

in either emergency treatment or hospitalization for those taking drugs

· In
July of 2005 the National Academy of Sciences came to the conclusion that the
preponderance of scientific evidence shows that even very low doses of radiation
pose a risk of cancer or other health problems and there is no threshold below
which exposure can be viewed as harmless.
· Cigarette
smoking has been associated with rheumatoid arthritis. The greater the number
of daily cigarettes and the longer duration of smoking, the greater the risk.
· Folic
acid and vitamin B12 supplements reduce the risk of hip fractures in elderly
Japanese patients following a stroke, researchers report in a new study in
the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA).
· The
antibiotic Tequin (gatifloxacin) has been taken off the market in America
following reports that it could cause potentially fatal swings in blood
sugar. At least
20 people have died, and another 150 have been rushed to hospital, while
on the drug in the past six years. The most vulnerable have been
diabetics and those with kidney disease.
· New
Zealand’s governmental food standards board may approve a genetically altered
type of corn used for animal feed. The Monsanto Corporation produces the new
corn called High-Lysine Corn LY038. Monsanto scientists have altered the corn
to contain higher levels of the amino acid lysine than is found in other corn
varieties. While lysine itself isn’t a health risk, if the LY038 variety
is cooked with sugars also found in the corn, compounds called AGE’s are
produced which are implicated in causing Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes,
and several other health conditions. Even though Monsanto states that LY038
is intended only for animal feed, they made application for approval as
a human food so they do not have to keep the altered corn separate from
edible corn.
· Half

of "pre-diabetes" that
puts us at high risk for heart attacks.
· Did
you know that your plastic sandwich, freezer and storage bags most likely
contain PVC? PVC is known as Polyvinyl chloride and is considered to
be the worst plastic--both to your health and to the environment. You'll
find it in lots of everyday products including food storage bags. To
soften PVC plastic into its flexible form, manufactuters usually add
various toxic chemicals known as "plasticizers" during manufacturing.
