The Age of Autism: Pox -- Part 3
UPI journalist Dan Olmsted has written about vaccine safety issues, especially vaccine-related autism, for several years. A sample of the investigative work he has done is the article, published in April 2005, examining the regression into autism of a child who received the combination live virus vaccine, Merck's ProQuad (measles-mumps-rubella-varicella), in clinical trials of the four-in-one vaccine. This article is part of a series of articles Dan has written, entitled "Age of Autism," which numbers 106 articles and counting. Below, the "Age of Autism" series is chronicled with links to each article.

The FDA Has Blood on Its Hands
Congressman Ron Paul (Texas), running for President these days, is more than an anti-war candidate; he has launched his campaign with the introduction of legislation in the House of Representatives that is likely to gain him plenty of recognition and unarguable public support. Congressman Paul, not a government expansionist by any measure, has introduced legislation that would rein in the Food and Drug Administration's absurd restrictions regarding health claims for dietary supplements...

The results of a new study from researchers at Johns Hopkins Children's Center, Led by the director of the center, Dr. Marlene Miller, examined national databases to compile medication error records between 1999 and 2004. More than 300 errors involved chemotherapy given to children. Dr. Miller told Reuters Health that children suffer medication errors at much higher rates than adults. A large part of the problem lies in extrapolating adult doses for use in children. Frequency of doses is also an issue. But health workers currently have no universal dosing standards to follow for children.
A new study from Duke University Medical Center researching the effects of flax seed and diet in relation to prostate cancer showed that flaxseed intervention dramatically slowed tumor growth - by as much as 30 to 40 percent - regardless of which diet was followed. The study's lead investigator, Wendy Demark-Wahnefried, Ph.D., told Dukemed News that the omega-3 fatty acids in flaxseed may modify the way that cancer cells lump together or attach to healthy cells. She also noted that the lignans in the outer shell of flaxseed might help cut the blood supply to cancer cells.
"Every day, 7 percent of the U.S. population visits a McDonald's, and 20-25 percent eat fast food of some kind, says Steven Gortmaker, professor of society, human development, and health at the Harvard School of Public Health. As for children, 30 percent between the ages of 4 and 19 eat fast food on any given day. But that's just the tip of the iceberg. Americans get processed food not only from fast-food restaurants but also from their neighborhood grocery stores. As it stands, about 90 percent of the money that Americans spend on food is used to buy--that's right--processed foods. Think about it ... if it comes in a box, can, bag or carton, it's processed. The fact that these foods are so readily available, and, often, of such poor quality, has led some, like associate professor of pediatrics at Harvard David Ludwig, to say that they're actually discouraging healthy eating and leading to a "toxic environment. There's the incessant advertising and marketing of the poorest quality foods imaginable. To address this epidemic, you'd want to make healthful foods widely available, inexpensive, and convenient, and unhealthful foods relatively less so. Instead, we've done the opposite," says Ludwig."
Potatoes have been getting a bad rap in the food world. But the pride of Idaho actually has much to boast about. Potatoes are filling, moderate in calories, and non-fattening, and are an excellent way to ensure your continued success in eating healthy. Potatoes are nutrient-dense, meaning you receive many nutrients for the amount of calories they have. The fiber is half soluble, half insoluble, so it helps to keep you regular and helps to lower cholesterol. And slowing down digestion helps to keep you full longer. Phytochemicals in potatoes include flavanoids and a recently identified compound called kukoamine that appears to help lower blood pressure. Anyone who still shuns the potato thinking it is fattening is missing out on a food tailor-made for the weight-conscious person.
Polyphenols in cocoa powder such as catechins and procyanidins may contribute to a reduction in "bad" low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, an elevation in beneficial high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, and the suppression of oxidized LDL, according to research published in The Journal of Nutrition (137:1436-1441, 2007).
Building hope for one pill to prevent many cancers, vitamin D cut the risk of several types of cancer by 60 percent overall for older women in the most rigorous study yet. The new research strengthens the case made by some specialists that vitamin D may be a powerful cancer preventive and most people should get more of it.
In the first study to show a vitamin could really improve memory, medical researchers have proven that a folate supplement might slow the cognitive decline usually seen with aging. The research, presented at the US-based Alzheimer's Associations first conference on prevention of dementia, demonstrated that otherwise healthy people could slow the decline in their brain function by taking double the recommended daily dose of folate.
