Hi [fname]
For many of us this week
is the beginning of a new school year. The stores are full-to-the-brim
of the much-needed paraphernalia for that all-important first day of school
and many five-year-olds are timidly entering a world of which they are
not familiar. Yellow school busses have returned to the streets and roads
and the neighborhood is now quiet by 6:30 p.m. as children implement their
fall schedules of after-school activities, homework and going to bed early. Although
the crispness of Fall weather will not arrive in Texas for at least a month
or so, many of you will be experiencing cooler weather very soon. Believe
me when I say that we Texans try very hard not to be envious. :o)
For our parent’s generation, preparation for back-to-school also
meant a good digestive tract cleanse to ensure health and as a preventative
for illness. Many different products were used and all, to the dismay
of most children, proved to be very effective. Why was this so important? Our
grandparents realized the importance of the immune system being at peak
performance—especially when children were among their peers in close
confinement for most of the day. Unfortunately somewhere along the
line between then and now we lost the importance of keeping the digestive
tract clean, especially where children are concerned. 70% of our immune
system is located in the digestive tract and is important in keeping the
body healthy. We now see disease that has its beginnings and
cause because of toxic and backed-up digestive tracts. Parents are
told that 2-3 bowel movements per week are normal for their children. Just
as it is important for adults to cleanse it is also important for children
to cleanse, especially if their diet consists of fast food, hydrogenated
oils, dairy, soft drinks and meats that are not organic. Keeping
the digestive tract clean is the first step to good immune system health. For
instructions on performing a digestive tract cleanse click
here. Initiating
an intestinal cleanse during August/September will also help to ensure
that the body has a good defense against the extremes of
the flu season.
We have devoted this August issue of Advanced Health & Wellness to
subjects that are important for children’s health, well-being and
safety. Our world is much more toxic than it was even 20 years ago
and we must educate ourselves in ways to protect our children’s health—ways
that may seem somewhat foreign and inconvenient to us. Teaching our
children how to eat healthy, live safely and how to recognize chemical
laden products
is imperative if they are going to continue with good health in their adult
years. The good news is that we are hearing about more
and more families
who are taking
the
extra
time
and effort to do just this and we at OAW applaud your endeavors
toward empowering your children with knowledge.
To all of you that are already back in the swing of school/college—even
those adults going “back” to school—and to those that
will be starting in the next few weeks, we wish you a safe, healthy and
empowering school year.

Parabens
Linked to Excessive Aging of Skin
|
By
Simon Pitman
Researchers in Japan
say that methylparaben, a commonly used antiseptic agent for a range of cosmetics
products, may cause skin to age when it is exposed to ultraviolet rays. The
ingredient, which has been connected to occasional skin allergies and skin
sensitization in the past, is currently listed as appearing in 3,559 products
in the Environmental Working Group's database of cosmetics products sold in the
US.

Can
some foods make you smarter? Research shows that nuts and seeds just might
boost your brainpower and balance your moods. That's right, everything from
the most common nuts -- such as walnuts, hazelnuts, cashews and almonds --
to the more exotic seeds and nuts can clear up that "brain fog" and
enable you to think clearer and be happier than you ever imagined.

Alloxan,
A Poison that Makes Lab Rats Diabetic, May Be in White Bread,
Cakes and Cookies; Should We Care?
|
By
Luise Light, MS, Ed.D.
Recently, alarming reports in the blog-sphere
warned that traces of the dangerous chemical alloxan, a toxic substance
and a known carcinogen used by researchers to make lab rats diabetic,
is present in white bread and other commercial baked goods (cookies,
crackers, donuts, hamburger rolls) made with bleached white flour. Puzzled
and disturbed by these reports, I set out to discover if it is true that
alloxan really has been found in white bread, and if so, how it gets
there, and whether, in the amounts found, it is a threat to people who
eat foods made with bleached, wheat flour.

Trail Mix from

and the following is one of my favorite health-boosting combos...

· Is
it worth paying more for omega-3-enriched eggs? The answer is a very
definite YES. Eating a breakfast of omega-3 enriched eggs could improve
your blood triglyceride levels, boost your heart health, and help you
reach your omega-3 recommended intake.
· Cancer
drug costs rose nearly 16 percent last year, while other prescription
drugs averaged a 3 percent price increase. Avastin, which is used to
treat colorectal cancer, currently sells for $50,000, and that price
could jump to $100,000 if Avastin is also approved to treat breast and
lung cancers. There is no doubt that cancer is big business in
the U.S. While in 1990, $3.53 billion was spent on chemotherapy, the
number more than doubled to $7.51 billion only four years later. By 2009,
so the latest projections, cancer therapy products and services will
rake in over $27 billion.
· Late
last year, the FDA asked the manufacturers of three common asthma medications
-- Advair, Serevent and Foradil -- to include safety warnings about a
patient's increased chances of severe and fatal asthma attacks. That
toxic trio of beta-agonist drugs has prompted European experts to request
the very same warning.
· Older
people (or even younger ones) could ward off digestive problems with
probiotics. People over the age of 60 have around 1000-fold less of the
so-called friendly bacteria in their gut.
· If
you have insomnia and are exhausted, try this aromatherapy blend. Valerian
5 drops; Lemon 10 drops; Mandarin 10 drops. Use in any aroma lamp.
· White
tea, imported mostly from the Fujian Province of China, is the least
processed form of tea - to make it, leaves are simply picked and air-dried.
Perhaps for that reason, white tea does have even greater antioxidant
activity than green tea, which is produced by picking, heating (steaming
or pan firing), and drying the leaves. To make black tea, another step,
oxidation, is required. White tea comes from the same plant as black
and green tea, Camellia sinensis, and has a delicate taste and pale color.
It releases the least amount of caffeine of all three teas, typically
from five to 15 milligrams per cup. White tea is also alkaline.
· Vioxx
alone killed nearly 28,000 Americans and sickened as many as 140,000
more, some estimates conclude. Seen any doctor’s offices
closed, raided or doctor’s ruined professionally because of this?
· All
antibiotics suppress the immune system and make you more susceptible
to other infections. Antibiotics are even scientifically linked to causing
breast cancer, autism, asthma, autoimmune disease, ear infections, hormonal
imbalances, infertility, erectile dysfunction, skin conditions, decreased
immunity and even death. Do your own research and make sure that
your illness warrants the use of antibiotics.
· Around
one in seven adult Americans cannot read, or have very limited literacy
skills, while the number jumps to one in four Americans who are 64 or
older. Unfortunately, doctors rarely realize their patients are unable
to read their instructions, while the patients never own up to their
shortcomings because "nobody wants to look dumb, especially not
in front of their doctor", says one physician. (Source: New
England Journal of Medicine, 2006; 355: 339-11.)
· If
you're a cancer specialist, you know you'll never go hungry – thanks
to the drug companies that supply the expensive cancer drugs. The latest
example of lavish wining and dining comes from Australia where
the pharmaceutical giant, Roche, recently entertained a group of oncologists
to a series of lavish dinners that followed a 'rigorous' day of 'education'. One
of the meals averaged nearly £1,000 ($1,920) per head, which goes
way beyond Australia's code of conduct for 'reasonable' hospitality.
Roche's beneficence is hardly unique. One cancer specialist in Australia
says that lavish entertaining is still common practice for doctors who
prescribe expensive drugs. Roche, which is based in Switzerland, last
year reported annual sales of SFr35bn and profits of SFr7bn, while sales
of its cancer drugs rose by an extraordinary 42 per cent in just one
year. (Source: British Medical Journal, 2006; 333: 169).
· Few
people know that the food coloring listed as cochineal extract comes
from female beetles. Food activists want to spread the word. When you
dig into a strawberry Yoplait yogurt, take a moment to contemplate where
the beautiful pink color comes from. Strawberries? Think again. It comes
from crushed bugs. Specifically, from the female
cochineal beetles and their eggs. And it's not just yogurt. The bugs
are also used to give red coloring to Hershey Good & Plenty candies,
Tropicana grapefruit juice, and other common foods.
· Alzheimer's
disease is the most common form of dementia and currently affects over
14 million people worldwide. Studies show that consumption of just
2-3 apples a day show an increased production of acetylcholine. Acetylcholine
is an essential neurotransmitter in the brain which helps with memory.
