On December 5, 2006, the USDA announced its new appointments to the National Organic Standards Board (NOSB). The NOSB essentially advises the USDA on how to interpret and implement federal organic laws that regulate industry. The NOSB also reviews and approves substances for placement on the National List of Approved and Prohibited Substances. In other words, the NOSB has the ability to significantly weaken or strengthen the effectiveness of the national organic standards.

Boosting vitamin D levels amongst people with dark skin, a population at greater risk of lower levels, could be an easy way to reduce a number of cancers, say researchers from Harvard. The link between vitamin D intake and protection from cancer dates from the 1940s when Frank Apperly demonstrated a link between latitude and deaths from cancer, and suggested that sunlight gave “a relative cancer immunity.” Take folic acid to protect against heart disease, say scientists. Despite some controversy in reports of the benefits of folate consumption on cardiovascular disease risk, the evidence is now enough to recommend the vitamin for heart health, British scientists have reported. A study prepared in 2004 revealed that chemotherapy achieved a five-year survival rate of less than 2.5 per cent. Dietary changes are four times as effective in treating cancer, another study revealed. Aubrey Blumsohn, a consultant at the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals, says that doctors have allowed the drugs industry to sabotage medicine. "We have allowed (the drugs) industry to subvert the rules of science. We have watched quietly as governments and academics have colluded with industry to hide information critical to our patients. We have remained silent as our medical schools have churned out graduates who have no knowledge of the dilemmas and scandals of medicine. Scientists at the University of Memphis in Tennessee have found that honey boosts the performance, endurance and recovery of athletes. In a recent study, nine competitive cyclists who took glucose and honey reduced their finishing times by up to three minutes with a six per cent increase in the athletes’ average power. Meanwhile tests on 39 weight trainers showed that those who took honey after exercise had lower levels of cortisol, a hormone released when the muscles are under stress. These findings suggest that honey may be the ideal pick-me-up as well as a great source of energy. Compared to other sugar sources, honey has also been found to keep levels of blood sugar fairly constant. In a 2004 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association, researchers reported on a study in which more than 600 subjects, aged 65 or older, received either a daily supplement of 200 IU of vitamin E or a placebo for one year. The results: Vitamin E supplements had a preventive effect on upper respiratory infections. In fact, the subjects who took E supplements had a 20 percent reduced risk of coming down with a common cold. People who ate legumes such as dry beans at least four times a week had a 22 percent lower risk of heart disease than people who ate them less than once a week. Out of 41 countries, those with the highest bean consumption had the lowest death rates from breast, prostate and colon cancers. Beans promote satiety and provide sustained energy, which helped individuals eat fewer calories and maintain a healthy weight. The high fiber content in beans helps people with diabetes maintain healthy blood glucose levels. The healthiest beans are: black beans, pinto beans, kidney beans, navy beans and lima beans. CT scans, X-rays, and all other forms of ionizing radiation should be used only when information that can be obtained from them will alter the course of a person's health care. When they are used, one should not be shy about asking the radiologist or technician at hand to ensure that the lowest possible exposure setting is utilized. If a physician strongly recommends the use of a CT scan, it is worthwhile to inquire about the possibility of having MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) done in its place. MRI does not utilize ionizing radiation and provides much of the same information that CT scans do. MRI is more expensive than CT scanning. For decades, the scientific community has known that x-rays cause a variety of mutations. X-rays are known to cause instability in our genetic material, which is usually the central characteristic of most aggressive cancers. There is no risk-free dose of x-rays. Even the weakest doses of x-rays can cause cellular damage that cannot be repaired. There is strong epidemiological evidence that x-rays are a known cause of almost every type of human cancer.
