Vitamin D Test in Dried Blood Spot
MOST AMERICANS HAVE LOW LEVELS OF THIS IMPORTANT VITAMIN

Blood Spot is the future of blood testing. Blood Spot testing provides results on a par with those from serum tests but without the cost and inconvenience of conventional blood drawing.

OAW is pleased to announce an exciting new test that can be performed in the privacy of your own home - Vitamin D (25-OH, Total) in dried blood spot by liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS).

Why test Vitamin D?

Vitamin D deficiency is very common, particularly in northern climates with little sunshine and among those who do not spend time outdoors. Vitamin D has been found to be important in protecting the body from a wide range of diseases, including cardiovascular disease, stroke, osteoporosis, osteomalacia, cancer, autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes (types 1 and 2), and schizophrenia.

Until now, venipuncture blood serum has been the standard medium for testing Vitamin D. To overcome the issues of inconvenience to the patient and practitioner, the Vitamin D test has been researched and defined in dried blood spots. A few drops of blood from a quick and nearly painless nick of the finger and placed on a filter paper to dry are all that is needed. This can be done in the privacy of your own home, meaning no more painful venous needle sticks or the inconvenience of making a doctor's appointment.

How does the new blood spot Vitamin D assay compare with conventional venipuncture serum testing?

This new blood spot testing method has been shown to be quantitatively equivalent to conventional serum Vitamin D testing by LC-MS/MS.

Is the Vitamin D Test Accurate?

Yes, it is very accurate and unlike other tests measures both vitamin D2 and D3 along with providing easy-to-interpret results. Because this test can be taken in the privacy of your own home there is no hassle of trying to get a doctor's appointment and then to the lab have blood drawn.

What are Optimal Vitamin D Levels, and What are considered Low Vitamin D Levels?

Vitamin D levels below 20 ng/mL indicates a deficiency, while levels below 30 ng/mL are considered "low." The consensus in the scientific community is that optimal vitamin D levels are 30 to 60 ng/mL. It is important to know that Vitamin D can become toxic at levels greater than 150 ng/mL. When you order the vitamin D test kit from OAW, you don't have to worry about remembering these numbers. Your results will be mailed to you in an easy-to-read and understand format.

How do I Take this Vitamin D Blood Spot Test?

Once you place your order throught the OAW shopping cart, you will receive a test kit in the mail. The test involves an almost painless finger stick and a few drops of blood on a special kind of blotting paper. Then simply place it in the prepaid envelope along with the lab payment of $115 and mail it off to the lab. There are several ways to pay including credit card. Complete and concise instructions are included. Results will come to OAW withint 2 to 3 weeks and we will then mail or fax them to you.  Should you have any questions, we are here to answer them.
